Reader has an ‘Oh, Dad’ moment

April 15, 2022

I was cleaning out my clothes closet recently. COVID restrictions have made for many a clean closet or garage. I came upon an old black turtleneck sweater that I wore in college and favored. I decided to wear it the next day on a visit to our daughter and son-in-law's house. And so it began. "What's with the sweater, Dad?" my daughter snickered. Mimicking my language she said, "Are you trying to be hip? I thought a clever retort was in order.  "I am Jack Kerouac reciting some bad poetry on a stool in a coffee house in Greenwich Village in the 1950s," I shot back. "Or I am a German U-boat captain in the Atlantic in 1943 peering through a periscope." "Oh, Dad," my daughter replied. "The Dad jokes aren't getting any better." I resigned with, "Oh well. I guess being hip is not what it used to be."
