Henry Lloyd Alexander Jr., enjoyed helping others

Henry Lloyd “Butch” Alexander Jr., 76, of Camden, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Bayhealth Kent Campus.

He was born Sept. 27, 1945, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., to the late Henry Lloyd Alexander Sr. and Catherine May Connolly.  He was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.  He received both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in applied ecology and entomology from the University of Delaware.

Mr. Alexander started as a biologist and eventually became the director of Fish and Wildlife for the State of Delaware. After retirement, he enjoyed working for Ohio State University Veterinary School. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a longtime member of both Christ Episcopal Church in Dover and All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Rehoboth. He dedicated his time to helping others, most notably the Boy Scouts of America, Red Cross, Delaware Food Bank and 4-H.  He was an avid hunter and conservationist. He took pleasure in traveling, and visited all 50 states and the seven continents. He loved cats and dogs, and adopted many throughout his life.  He enjoyed skiing, sailing and his time in Rehoboth Beach. He was known for his love of chocolate.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Ann Constance Hoffman.

Mr. Alexander is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Ann Seltzer Alexander of Camden; son, Benjamin Lloyd Alexander (Natalie) of Newark; daughter, Elizabeth Connolly Alexander (Ryan Berg) of Washington, D.C.; nieces and nephews, Catherine Lynch, William Hoffman and Linda Hoffman; and granddaughters, Anna Marie, Elizabeth and Elena Alexander, and Cameron Berg.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 6, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover. A funeral will be at 3 p.m., Saturday May 7, at Christ Episcopal Church, 523 South State St., Dover.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Boy Scouts of Del-Mar-Va Council or the Delaware 4-H.
