From food truck to local favorite: Taco Reho

August 23, 2022

Starting out as a small food truck serving up delicious tacos and burritos in Sussex County, Taco Reho grew so quickly in popularity that owner Billy Lucas decided to open a brick-and-mortar location to expand the good vibes and taco elation in Rehoboth Beach.

On his journey to opening Taco Reho, Lucas spent a few summers at Nage restaurant in Rehoboth working under Kevin Reading. He accepted an offer to work for Thomas Keller at Bouchon in Las Vegas, and there he discovered what the path to perfection was all about. His quest for culinary education drove him to San Francisco, where the vast food culture of the Bay Area opened his mind to an elevated state of culinary prowess. There, he discovered the fascinating field of rock and roll catering, and made contact with Chris Mitchell, owner of Latitude 45 Catering. Lucas combined his passion for cooking and his other great interest, music. The rest of history began when he joined the tour.

Lucas cooked for countless bands and crews over the course of six years before relocating to Los Angeles. Lady Gaga, The Eagles, Nine Inch Nails, Jay-Z, Black Sabbath, Tool, Blink-182, Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake, Michael Bublé, Prince and Jane's Addiction are just a few of the celebrities who have enjoyed Chef Billy's cuisine.

After his travels, Lucas was eager to build up his own establishment. While still entrenched in the LA food scene and missing his East Coast roots and home, a business concept started to germinate in his mind. He created So Cal Street Food to introduce West Coast flavors to the community where he was raised, and start something fresh and interesting in his beloved Delaware beaches area. Taco Reho was born.

Black Betty, Taco Reho's renowned food truck, became a Rehoboth Beach fixture in just a few short years. Many people found themselves in love with the idea of being up close and personal with the chefs themselves as they made their tortillas fresh from ground corn on the outdoor grill. A lot of fans wanted to enjoy the taste of the Black Betty experience in a brick-and-mortar setting.

They got their wish in summer 2021, when Taco Reho opened up at its new location on Coastal Highway north of Rehoboth Beach. Loyal food truck patrons were excited to have their favorites in one location to enjoy the taco creations in a comfortable atmosphere, surrounded by good friends and great food. The newly opened restaurant became a welcome addition to the Rehoboth Beach scene.

In the new Taco Reho, customers can watch the cooks make the tortillas fresh from scratch. The atmosphere is laid-back and fun, with a rock ‘n’ roll-themed interior to keep the mood festive and lively. Guests can order all their favorites ranging from the delicious Pork Carnitas Taco to the delectable Baja Fish Burritos, or try the renowned Danger Dog. This hot dog is bacon-wrapped, with black beans, shredded cheese, avocado, yellow mustard, chipotle mayo, queso fresco, pickled red onion, pico and cilantro, which combine for a wonderful taste.
