Senate leadership shows support for Russ Huxtable
The Nov. 8 election is less than two weeks away, and state senators from New Castle County were recently in Sussex County voicing their support for Russ Huxtable, a Democrat running for office in District 6.
Senate Majority Leader Sen. Bryan Townsend, D-Newark; Senate President Pro Tempore Sen. David Sokola, D-Newark; Senate Majority Whip Sen. S. Elizabeth Lockman, D-Wilmington; Sen. Marie Pinkney, D-New Castle; and Sen. Sarah McBride, D-Wilmington North, attended the Shore Democrats meeting Oct. 19.
The senators discussed a number of issues such as traffic, housing and medical care, and said it would be good to have someone like Huxtable working with them for the people of Sussex County.
Longtime Sussex County Democratic Party strategist Mitch Crane was in attendance at the meeting.
He said the senators were on hand because they think Huxtable can take the seat. Huxtable’s opponent is Republican Steve Smyk, who has served Representative District 20 since 2012.
Huxtable and Smyk are facing off for the seat Sen. Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes, has held since it was created as part of redistricting in 2012. Lopez announced in July 2021 that he would not be seeking re-election this year.
Senate District 6 comprises Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Lewes, and areas of Milton, Angola and Milford. Crane recognized the meeting wasn’t taking place within the boundaries of the district, but he said the Democrats in District 20 don’t have a local Senate race in which to be involved. This group can help Huxtable’s candidacy, he said.
District 20 is currently held by Republican Minority Leader Sen. Gerald Hocker, who is running unopposed.
