Elizabeth Stahl Weinberg, education advocate

March 17, 2023

Elizabeth (Betsy) Stahl Weinberg, 82, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes surrounded by family and close friends. She was born Oct. 14, 1940, to John and Julia (Gilley) Stahl in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Betsy earned a degree from Kutztown University. After working a number of years as a school librarian in Interboro School District in Pennsylvania, she went on to work for Pennsylvania State Education Association and later for the Delaware State Education Association. She was a passionate advocate for education employees and is remembered fondly by many people whom she represented, trained and with whom she served on committees. Her sense of fairness and justice was unparalleled, and she could always be counted upon to stand strongly for a worthy cause. Betsy met the love of her life while at Interboro. Howard, too, was a masterful advocate and facilitator who preceded her in death in 2019. Together, they raised their daughter Tammy.

Betsy loved the challenge of buying a house and then renovating it to make it their home. Once done, she was soon looking for the next project. She loved decorating, evidenced by the stack of design magazines filled with slips of paper marking interesting ideas. She knitted, she sewed, from upholstery to curtains to anything else, and was constantly perusing magazines for more ideas. She loved to refinish furniture, and a favorite pastime for her and Howard was going to Vermont browsing antique stores. She never met a crossword puzzle she couldn’t conquer in an amazingly short period of time and was a voracious reader. A fantastic cook, she took great joy in hosting her friends and family for meals, simple or extravagant, remaining in charge by refusing most help. And great celebrations they always were! Betsy and Howard were also animal lovers and rescued an abundance of dogs and cats over the years. She will be missed by her most recent companion, Imp.

Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Tom and Norman “Bud” Stahl (Audrey); her nephew Brian; and her beloved husband of 46 years, Howard. Betsy is survived by her daughter, Tamara Gohean (Claire); her nephews, Joel Stahl (Mauritz), Jonathan Stahl and Roger Stahl (Diane); her niece, Julia Stahl; the Lake Forest gang, and numerous other great friends.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Beebe Healthcare who provided Betsy with such friendly, compassionate, skilled and attentive care, with special recognition to the ICU.

Service and interment will be private.

Final care has been entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a charity of choice: Brandywine Valley ASPCA, 22918 DuPont Blvd., Georgetown, DE 19947; or ACLU Delaware, 100 W. 10th Street, Ste. 706, Wilmington, DE 19801.
