Lewes library honors the Bard with festival
As part of the Lewes Public Library Shakespeare Festival in April, the Fultontown Theatre Company presented the premiere of “Falstaff the Friend: Falstaff the Fool” April 15 at the library.
The theme of the month-long celebration of Shakespeare is Remixing the Bard: Modern Takes on Classic Works.
Falstaff is a fictional character who appears in three plays and is eulogized in a fourth. He is an overweight, vain and boastful knight who spends most of his time in the company of petty criminals at the Boars Head Inn.
This adaptation of Shakespeare’s works traces Falstaff’s story and highlights some of his most important and memorable interactions with other characters.
The company is the resident theater ensemble affiliated with Salisbury University, and primarily comprises alumni and current students. The company endeavors to create and produce professional-level theater performances on the Eastern Shore and surrounding areas, and provide support and additional opportunities to members of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts at Salisbury University as well as local and regional high schools.
The festival, sponsored by Lewes library, is partially funded by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The festival is also supported in part by Browseabout Books, and the John and Sarah Freeman Foundation.
Two events remain on the festival schedule, including an “Evening of New Works” at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 21, in the library's teen writer's room, and the Folger Library costume display will be at the library through Sunday, April 30.
