The Beacon Middle School softball team took friendly bragging rights for the Cape school district with a 12-3 victory over Mariner May 8 at Cape’s Bill Cordrey Field in Lewes.
Teagan Baker went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs to lead the Beacon squad. Sara Craig went 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs. Grace Heers, Isabella Fitzgerald and Olivia Mukulski each delivered with an RBI.
Craig went the distance in the circle to pick up the win, striking out five batters, and giving up 11 hits and three runs.
Mariner was led by Addison Zimmerman, who went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. A'niyah Taylor went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sophie Sockriter had an RBI. Mikayla Pollard went 2-for-4.
Riley Windish went the distance in the circle, striking out six, and allowing 11 hits and just four earned runs.
The Beacon squad ends the season at 2-6, while the Mariner team is now 5-5 with one game remaining.
Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
