The wild ponies of Chincoteague swim across the Assateague Channel from Assateague Island every last Wednesday in July and later swim back. It does sound mildly interesting, but it is a cultural happening as 40,000 people show up to watch.
Every spring the wild ponies of Cape girls' lacrosse run up and down the field wearing teams down with their stable of athletes. The Vikings run two midfields with no perceptible dropoff in talent, and it’s hard for teams with less depth of athletes to keep up.
Last Saturday at Archmere, Cape played a discombobulated first half, facing 15 shots and failing to clear the ball on two occasions. The score was 5-3 in favor of Cape, but the players and coach P.J. Kesmodel were less than happy.
“Defensively we did a good job, and Gina [Voss] played her best half of the season. We marked Archmere on the calendar after last season; we knew they would have a good team,” Kesmodel said.
The Junkyard Dog, Jacki Coveleski, started the second half by winning three straight draw controls, which the Vikings converted into goals in the first 40 seconds to lead 8-3. The Cape race for goals was on, and by 9:31 left in the game the Vikings led 14-3 and the running clock was in the house.
Cape cruised home for a 17-5 victory.
“The kids played real well in the second half, only allowing seven shots on goal, and goalie Maggie Delp picked up where Gina left off. Everyone played a lot and the defense of Lexi [Heuring], Teenie [Bristowe], Kelly [Smith] and Jenna [Steele] was great,” Kesmodel said.
Cape’s diversified scoring attack was paced in goals by Allie Yeager 5, Sarah Young 4, Anna Frederick and Jackie Coveleski 3, and Kat Judge and Lexi Woodruff each with 1.
Anna Frederick also contributed 5 assists while Kat Judge, Erin Ricker, Lexi Woodruff and Sara Young each had 1.
Archmere's scoring came from Elyse Andrews and Patreece Spence with 2 and Tori Zugehar with 1.
Cape outshot the Auks 26-22. Goalie saves in the game were Gina Voss 6 and Maggie Delp 4. Lucia Rizzo of Archmere had 5 saves.
Cape will play at Saints Peter and Paul at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 19. Cape will host the Severn School at noon, Saturday, April 21.
The undefeated Cape junior varsity squad defeated the previously undefeated Auks 7-3. Goals were scored by Riley Wagner 3, Sophie Kalb 2 and single goals from Claire Carnevale and Alyssa Mocci. Sam Broadhurst went the distance in goal for the Vikings.
