Historical society kicks off new Tavern Talks Sept. 15

September 13, 2023

The Lewes Historical Society announced a new performance schedule of its popular Tavern Talks program.

Eight shows of this fascinating and immersive live event will be held at Sussex Tavern on the historic Shipcarpenter Street Campus in Lewes.

The new presentation, “Faber Sua Fortuna - A Self-Made Man,” will transport guests to 1793 Lewes, when the young nation faced a crisis that may seem all too familiar: a national health emergency in the form of a yellow fever epidemic. As thousands of Philadelphians grew terribly ill, those who could flee the city did so, many finding their way to Lewes.

The stories of Lewistowners, and how they dealt with the crisis, along with a few of their wild, and sometimes dangerous theories and remedies, will be presented by LHS interpretive staff in authentic period dress. Adding to the authenticity of the performance is the distinctive and historic setting of Sussex Tavern.

This is a small group event so tickets will be limited. A total of eight shows are scheduled over four nights, at 5 and 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15 and 16, and Sept. 22 and 23. Guests must be 21 years old to attend.

For more information and to purchase tickets, go to historiclewes.org and select the programs tab.

Proceeds support the Lewes Historical Society's commitment to the preservation, interpretation and cultural enrichment of the Lewes region through museum exhibits, educational programs, historical researc, and publications.
