The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Organization of Sussex County Inc. invites all to participate in the 36th Annual Commemorative Weekend Celebration in honor of the late civil rights leader from Saturday to Monday, Jan. 13 to 15.

The annual banquet will be held at 4:30 p.m., Jan. 13, at the CHEER Center, 20520 Sand Hill Road, Georgetown.

The speaker will be Rep. Esthelda (Stell) Parker Selby, D-Milton, distinguished educator. Recipient of many awards and honors, Selby has served on the Delaware State University board of trustees, as Milton City Councilwoman and as president of the Cape Henlopen School Board, and as an active member of many local organizations. Selby exemplifies the theme of the 2024 celebration weekend, Living the Dream: It Starts With Me. For King’s dream to truly be fulfilled, each individual has an important role to play.

Organizers encourage everyone to worship at a location of their choice Sunday, and to participate in the weekend’s various activities sponsored by local organizations, especially service projects.

The annual tradition of conducting a community worship service will continue at 10 a.m., Jan. 15, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, located at 23115 Slaughter Neck Road, Lincoln,. The messenger this year will be Bishop Jamie Hazzard of the Welcome Full Gospel Holiness Church, Slaughter Neck.

The community’s support is always needed and appreciated in perpetuating and nurturing King’s legacy, vision and dream. Send donations to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Organization, P.O Box 781, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Contributions will help fund scholarships for deserving youth in Sussex County and the ongoing work of the organization.

The price for banquet tickets will be $50 for adults, and $25 for children ages 15 and under. Tickets are available through advance sales only; no tickets will be sold at the door. The deadline to reserve tickets is Wednesday, Dec. 27. For ticket sales or more information, contact Don Peterson at 703-963-1871 or email mlkcelebration@gmail.com.
