Film society sets screenings for Christmas night and New Year’s Eve
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present a screening of “Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas” at 5 p.m., Monday, Dec. 25, and a New Year’s Eve screening and celebration of “A Fish Called Wanda” at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 31, at the Cinema Art Theater near Lewes.
An offbeat, irreverent musical documentary, “Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas” tells the story of a group of Jewish songwriters, including Irving Berlin, Mel Tormé, Jay Livingston, Ray Evans, Gloria Shayne Baker and Johnny Marks, who wrote the soundtrack to Christianity’s most musical holiday. It’s a tale of immigrant outsiders who became irreplaceable players in pop culture’s mainstream – a generation of songwriters who found in Christmas the perfect holiday in which to imagine a better world.
Admission for “Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas” is $12 for all patrons.
”A Fish Called Wanda” stars British comedic geniuses John Cleese and Michael Palin, and award-winning American actors Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Kline. Celebrating its 35th anniversary release, the film brings four very different people together to pull off a jewel heist. It’s a comedy caper with plenty of hijinks involving a very proper barrister. The event will start off with a London New Year’s Eve countdown celebration at 7 p.m. EST, with complimentary champagne, spirits and small plates. Attendees can expect party hats and a few surprise giveaways as well.
Admission for “A Fish Called Wanda” is $20 for members and $25 for general audiences.
