Local children believe at Elks Polar Express party

December 31, 2023

The weather was balmy yet threatened with rain, while inside the lodge, joy was hard to contain, as the Polar Express train steamed and chugged into the station at Cape Henlopen Elks 2540 in Lewes.

The call “All Aboard!” could be heard as the Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge was magically transformed into a Polar Express train station Dec. 10. For a brief time, the world outside was left behind as visitors climbed aboard and became passengers.

More than 40 children and their families were welcomed at the free event hosted by the local Elks Lodge and spearheaded once again by Betty Ann Kortlang, lecturing knight.

Helpful elves directed passengers to different stations. Travelers met hobos surrounding a campfire and then made out their wish lists to send off in a special North Pole mailbox. Ticket agent Mike Bradley handed out keepsake golden train tickets, and warned holders not to lose them. Cheerful conductor Marty Schreck said, “Tickets, please,” and hole-punched them while posing for photos in front of a huge train mural.

Passengers arrived at Caribou Crossing and met Smokey (Dallas Butler) with his red beard and funny shriek that caribou (and elk) can understand. Santa's reindeer were awaiting a lunch of popcorn (provided by elf Pat Scheivert) which the children happily threw into their pen. All along the way, happy elves frolicked around as cheerful servers sang and danced to the Polar Express soundtrack while they carried trays of hot chocolate.

The Grinch (Mary DiGennaro) made a brief appearance and tried unsuccessfully to steal gifts, but was thwarted by the many helpers. Eventually, his heart grew and he was embraced by the love in the room.

For those who believe – and even for those who don't – there was Santa himself! Santa's helper Lisa Travis listened to Christmas wishes and passed out handpicked gifts from Santa's workshop, led by Buddy Hall-McBride. Craft tables stood nearby for the young passengers to unwrap their presents and enjoy popcorn, cookies and ice cream before leaving with magical memories of the day.

This year’s Polar Express Extravaganza was a humongous success, and a heartwarming experience for all, thanks to the efforts of almost 40 hardworking volunteers. It was so very rewarding to see the smiles and hear the laughter of the young passengers.

The holidays are a time to revitalize love and joy in the local community and beyond. It is with great pride that Cape Henlopen Elks re-created some of the magic of Christmas, and wish for all the ability to hear the ringing of the bell, and believe.
