With the Blue-White Senior Girls’ Lacrosse All-Star Game tied 13-13 with eight seconds on the clock, Cape’s Anna Sullivan took control of the draw and hit Ursuline’s Claire Fowler on the crease, who then put the rock in the twine to boost the Blue team to victory in the annual game at DE Turf June 11.
“I was standing on the circle and Anna was taking the draw,” said Fowler. “I knew that as long as she won the draw, we were going to capitalize and get a shot. I had full faith in her, and she won it and got the ball to me for the shot.”
“This was an awesome game,” said Sullivan. “It was really exciting back-and-forth action, and I didn’t know if we were going to come away with the win. But it made it that much more exciting. It was a great end to the season. Everyone was so nice. It was cool to play with all the girls that I played against during the last few seasons.”
Sullivan, along with her Cape teammate Anna Lopez, represented the state championship squad with an intestinal fortitude that was hard to match on the turf.
Sullivan won 75% of the draws, scored three goals and tallied three assists, none more important than the pass to Fowler for the winning goal.
Lopez made eight saves in her 30 minutes of action. For her stellar play in the goal, Lopez was awarded first-team all-Henlopen Conference, first-team all-state and 2024 All-American honors.
“I felt great in the game,” Lopez said. “I was really proud of how our team came together even though we’ve never played together before. I was proud to represent Cape with Anna.”
Sussex Academy’s Callie Short scored a goal for the White squad.
Other Henlopen Conference players seeing quality action for the Blue team were Ashtyn Torbert, Savanna Wise, Regan Vidrine and Olivia Morand of Dover; Emma Massey, Giulia Sweet, Madison Houdek and Montana Golden of Lake Forest; Nina Cooper and Kyra Johnson of Milford; Addyson Whitaker, Janna Fretz and Abigale Matthews of Smyrna; and Riley Faircloth, Lauren Wark and Lyndsey Weller of Caesar Rodney.
Henlopen Conference players from the White squad were Callie Short from Sussex Academy, Claire Johnson of Indian River, and Madison Todd, Molly Kenney and Christina Phillips of Polytech.
