Cape lacrosse tames Tigers 16-5

Cape plays May 19 at Tower Hill
May 17, 2012

Cape boys' lacrosse is a young team that finished the regular season 10-5, which included a pair of sudden-death overtime losses to Wilmington Friends and Tower Hill. Turn those into wins and the season is 12-3, which sounds a whole lot better and more reflective of the talent in the program.

The Cape team is a whole lot better than most fans realize. In the opening round of the state tournament May 16, Cape went second-half surge on visiting A.I. du Pont, outscoring the Tigers 8-2 for a convincing 16-5 victory. Cape moved on to the round of eight, and the Vikings will travel to Tower Hill for a 7 p.m. game Saturday, May 19.

The mission of Cape boys' lacrosse is always to make the final four, then from there make a run at the state title. A win at Tower Hill is a tall assignment, and lurking in the semifinal round in Cape's bracket is powerhouse Salesianum.

Goals scorers for Cape in the win were Luke Benson 4, Matt Kane 4, Blake Mann 3, Sam Mohr 2, with single goals from Nick DiGuglielmo, Sean Grogan and Jerome Johnson.

Assists were by Benson with 2 and singles from Tom Ott, Kane, Justin Lopez, Grogan, Todd Keen and Christian Prestipino.

Cape outshot A.I. du Pont 43-27. Grant Gillan had 10 saves for Cape.

Tigers goals were scored by Alec Shannon 2, John Condron 2 and Chris Daley. Andrew Fox had 15 saves for the Tigers.
