Homeless might disagree with Huxtable’s so-called accomplishments

July 16, 2024

As I was reading my Cape Gazette recently, I had just pulled a glossy flyer sent by local Democratic Russ Huxtable from my mailbox telling me about all the progress he has made in office as our local state senator to tackle Delaware’s broken housing policy.

In an almost split-screen moment of clarity, I turned my paper to the sad full-page article written by Ron MacArthur describing the homeless crisis and how just a few days ago, the Delaware State Police cleared a homeless encampment from the woods in the Midway area along Route 1. I read the Cape Gazette article carefully, looking for a comment or some sort of acknowledgement of the difficult challenges faced by our local homeless by Huxtable but saw not a word. Yet in boldface type on Huxtable’s flyer, he talks about how pleased he is at his work. I’m sure those living in the woods, and the thousands on waiting lists for affordable housing in eastern Sussex County, would disagree with his disingenuous assessment of himself.

We need to vote out politicians who seek to fool the public just to make themselves look better than they are. Don’t we have enough of that going on in Washington, D.C.?  Thankfully, our local paper, which is one of the best local papers in the country, did the real work Huxtable chose to ignore and shared the true story of how our area and state are in crisis regarding housing for those who need it the most.

Hopefully enough voters had the same split-screen clarity as I did and vote for change at the polls in November, and start that change by voting Russ Huxtable out of office.
