This summer, the governor of Delaware signed the 2024 Delaware Bond Bill, which allocated an extra $1 million to DNREC’s budget for a coastal region bathhouse renovation and dune crossing at Cape Henlopen State Park, not a beach bathhouse with larger capacity.
The Preserve Our Park Coalition endorses the option to renovate the current McBride Bathhouse at Cape Henlopen State Park. It is high time the McBride Bathhouse had at least one ADA-compliant bathroom and dressing room, a separate space for lifeguards and a modest-sized snack bar – not a restaurant, which by law is not permitted at Cape Henlopen State Park. Most important, renovating the current McBride Bathhouse, as opposed to new construction, helps preserve the oceanfront dune and prevents new oceanfront construction.
On Wednesday, July 31, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., DNREC will present a community workshop at Cape Henlopen State Park, Officer's Club/Youth Camp 3, 14628 Officers Road, Lewes, to give the public the opportunity to listen and share feedback about the DNREC Division of Parks and Recreation’s planned capital projects in the park. Community members can drop in anytime.
Projects to be featured at the workshop include:
- Traffic data analysis
- Entrance reconfiguration
- Construction of a new park office
- The Point Trail
- An addition to Battery 519
- Campground improvements
- A beach bathhouse with larger capacity
- The Cape Henlopen fishing pier
- CHSP’s Wolfe Neck Loop Trail
- The Biden Environmental Center.
It is important that members of the public respond by attending this meeting, asking questions and writing letters to help DNREC prioritize these proposed projects.
