The summer swim season is a memory now. And it’s a great memory for the Lewes Yacht Club/Sussex Family YMCA swim as winners of the Delmarva Swim Association championship.
The swimmers, coached by Mike Vansant, finished with 1,810 points, ahead of the Makos with 1,317, Ocean Pines with 1,231, Talbot, 1,077 and Henson Family YMCA, 1,058.
“This was an outstanding achievement for both Lewes Yacht Club and the Sussex Family YMCA,” said Vansant. “When the teams merged last year, we knew we were onto something special when we completed an undefeated dual-meet season and finished second at summer champs.”
This year, he said, the team started the season with the goal of again going undefeated in dual meets, and then following that up with a DSA championship.
“This championship was the first for LYC since the 1980s, and the first ever for SFY. The team has been working hard, many of our swimmers year-round,” said Vansant. “This was the culmination of all of that hard work. As a coach, I could not be more proud of the effort put in by all of the swimmers, coaches and parent volunteers involved.”
The 15-18 girls’ 200 medley relay team set a new DSA record of 1:51.37. Team members were Victoria Evans, Gracie Maughan, Mia Jaoude and Julia Caldwell.
Event winners included: Avery Andrew, 9-10, 25 breaststroke; Mia Jaoude, 15-18, 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle; Serena Jaoude, 9-10, 25 butterfly and 100 IM; Anika Kane, 8 and under, 25 butterfly;
