YogaFresh dishes up ice cream taste without the calories

Frozen yogurt targets health-conscious consumers
June 6, 2012

YogaFresh frozen yogurt brings ice cream flavor but not the calories at its new store in Rehoboth Beach.

Owners Melissa and David Harrison of Belair, Md., started selling frozen yogurt after David tasted it during a business trip. They both had jobs in other businesses, but decided to start their own company selling fresh frozen yogurt.

The idea took off in Belair, allowing the couple to expand to Ocean City and now to Rehoboth Beach.

The motto of "ice cream taste, yogurt waist" rings true – a "slim" serving is just 100 calories and fat free.

The shop, in Henlopen Junction just outside Rehoboth, opened May 25 and had a great Memorial Day weekend turnout, said Melissa Harrison.

The owners are still hiring and finishing up the interior, she said.

"At all our stores, we focus on the locals. We add bits of local character to the stores, and we offer a frequent flyer card that keeps customers coming back," Harrison said.

The Harrisons looked for the perfect space in Rehoboth for more than a year. They also plan to open a location in Bethany Beach next summer. They worked 15-hour days renovate the former dining room of the neighboring Chinese restaurant in time for Memorial Day.

Flavors of frozen yogurt include New York cheesecake, chocolate, vanilla, Greek-yogurt and fat-free strawberry, among others. Each cup of yogurt can be topped with a variety of nuts, candy and fresh fruit.

Frozen yogurt starts as a liquid yogurt and is frozen in the machine. Harrison said that's different from yogurts that start as powder and become yogurt when water is added.

"Most of our customers are health-conscious and looking for something sweet that is also low calorie," Harrison said. "We give free samples every day, and people are usually surprised by how good the yogurt tastes."

YogaFresh also sells Chobani yogurt parfaits with fresh granola and fruit.

For now the store is open from 2 to 10 p.m., but the hours will expand to 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. once all the staff is in place next week. For more information, go to yogafresh.net or visit YogaFresh on Facebook.
