Allen Luzak earns national energy efficiency professional certification

June 5, 2009
An Energy Star-rated home is built to be 30 percent more efficient than homes meeting current building codes.

Allen Luzak, president of JCN Building Science and Home Performance, has completed his Home Energy Rating System (HERS) certification through the Kansas Building Science Institute in Manhattan, Kan.

This nationally recognized certification will allow JCN to perform energy-efficiency modeling at new homes. The goal is to help builders have their homes meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star performance guidelines.

With many years of building science experience and performing close to 3,000 home energy audits, Luzak has added to his arsenal of energy efficiency expertise.

“Helping builders build in energy efficiency will be a great benefit to homeowners as it is not only the cost of the home, but the energy and utility costs that are the true costs of home ownership,” said Luzak.

“The Energy Star logo has become a widely recognized brand. An Energy Star-rated home not only costs less to operate; it provides a much healthier indoor environment.”

As a quality assurance check, JCN will perform several inspections during the construction process to ensure all proposed measures are being met. The firm will also perform pressurized duct leakage testing to ensure the duct system is sealed and not leaking to the outdoors, inspect the quality of and proper placement of the insulation and perform a blower door test on the shell of the building to ensure proper air sealing and building tightness standards are met without causing indoor air-quality problems.

“Once the testing and inspections are complete, a certificate is issued to the homeowner to validate the home’s efficiency,” Luzak said. “This certificate should be kept with important papers should they need it during resale. It makes the home stand out from similar homes not built to Energy Star standards.”

JCN also has an Indoor Air Quality Association council certified industrial hygienist on staff who can conduct indoor air-quality assessments as well as mold sampling and remediation services. JCN has a complete crawl space solution service to help remediate any crawl space issues that may arise in a home.

“JCN’s business model is to provide homeowners and business owners a one-stop shop for diagnosing and fixing any sort of energy, moisture, water or mold problems that may arise,” Luzak said.

JCN, located in the Harbeson Business Park on Route 9, can be reached at 684-2016.
