What a lovely tribute to Ron MacArthur by Nick Roth! On behalf of the members of Delaware Press Association, I offer a heartfelt expression of thanks and admiration for a life well lived, and a sense of loss because a well-respected member both of the press and of the close-knit communities in Sussex County and in the larger community of the First State is gone and all are left to acknowledge the passing of a fine man.
There are numerous people throughout the state who know that, as Nick said, Ron “left an indelible mark on Sussex County as an elected official, community volunteer, newspaper reporter and columnist, photographer and historian.”
DPA member Corinne Litzenberg of Lewes wrote to say: “Ron had a deep passion for researching and writing articles on Sussex County history, particularly for Lewes history. I was fortunate to work with Ron last summer when he kindly took photos at the Indian River Life-Saving Station for ‘Ben and the Brass Check: A Lewes Life-Saving Station Story,’ and one of Ron’s photos became the cover of the book. His impeccable talent for writing, paired with his outstanding photography, will continue to be a vital resource for all readers, especially those in the Delaware region.”
As editor of Corinne’s book, I enjoyed messages and phone chats with Ron – a treasure trove of information – about historical details regarding the Great Blizzard of 1888, featured in the life-saving station story, as well as the photos.
Board member Katie Tabeling, editor of Delaware Business Times, summed up the message we convey to you: “We stand with the paper in this tremendous loss.”
With sympathy and best wishes to you and the Cape Gazette staff on the loss of your esteemed colleague and friend,
