Cape's Southerst earns graduate education degree with distinction
Cape Henlopen High School Class of 2017 alumna Elizabeth Southerst has graduated with a master of arts degree in special and inclusive education (autism) with distinction from the Institute of Education, University College London.
UCL’s IOE has ranked No. 1 for education in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for the last 11 years.
Southerst’s graduation marks a significant milestone in her commitment to advancing inclusive and evidence-based educational practices. Her master’s studies at UCL focused on autism and the female’s experience in educational environments, equipping her with research-backed strategies and a deeper understanding of neurodiversity in learning, work and social environments.
Prior to her postgraduate studies, Southerst served as a dedicated educator at Rehoboth Elementary School, where she taught fourth and fifth grades for the Sussex Consortium. In 2021, she earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education with a concentration in special education from the University of Delaware.
“I am honored to have studied at UCL's Institute of Education and to be part of a program that prioritizes inclusive learning and celebrates neurodiversity,” said Southerst. “This experience has deepened my commitment to create supportive, student-centered classrooms where every learner has the opportunity to thrive, and to foster work environments that are welcoming to neurodiverse individuals.”
Southerst plans to apply her advanced expertise toward policy development and advocacy efforts to further inclusive classroom and work practices, and her own continued professional development in the field of special and inclusive education focusing on the lived experience of girls and women with autism.
Southerst is the daughter of Tim Southerst and Andrea Spuck of Lewes, who own Puzzles and Lewes Gourmet on Front Street.
