Anyone who wants to take part in one of Dewey Beach’s most time-honored traditions is planning now for this year’s Running of the Bull, set for 2 p.m., Saturday, June 28.
While there are some disagreements as to how many runnings have taken place (blame COVID), the event is believed to date back to 1997. One definite fact: This event is now older than many of the people who attend it.
For first-timers, it’s important to note that no actual bulls will be running on the beach; it’s simply two people in a bull costume.
The bull will chase participants down the beach and back to the Starboard restaurant.
After the run, the bull and the matador will face off and fight “to the death.” The event includes a Hemingway lookalike contest, and entrants can win cool prizes.
Event founder Michael McDonnell said, “[Running of the Bull] is an event of silliness for the sake of silliness.”
On a serious note, due to the outdoor nature of these activities, wearing plenty of sunblock is highly recommended.
Steve “Monty” Montgomery, owner of The Starboard, and his entire staff are ready to welcome everyone to have lots of fun and support a great cause. They believe in partying with purpose and giving back to the community, so proceeds from this year’s Running of the Bull will support the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company.
Crowds will be gathering bright and early, and the bull run will commence at about 2 p.m. There will be music, merriment and a bunch of bull. What more could anyone possibly want?
