A resilient Cape major all-star team will have to be perfect for the remainder of the District 3 softball tournament if they want to represent the region in the state tournament.
Cape lost to Midwest 17-13 June 25, but managed to score a run in every single inning to keep themselves in a game they seemed out of after the top of the fourth inning. Trailing 13-4, Cape tallied seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 13-11.
Earlier in the game, Cali Smith notched an inside-the-park home run that scored Abby Frey in the first inning. Charlie Hopkins made her way around the bases in the second inning for another run, while Bailey Lubach’s double drove in Julia Petito in the third inning.
Frey got the fourth-inning party started with a walk and managed to score when Smith laced a triple into right field. Smith crossed home when Arden McPhee grounded out, just before Ta’lynn Murray roped a double into left, plating Lilyanna Collins and Audreigh Kastor. Murray put one on the board when she trotted home following Emery Bailey’s walk. Lubach’s second double of the game scored Delaney Bowe and Petito to pull Cape within two.
Smith collected her third extra-base hit on a double that drove in Lexi Crossan in the fifth inning. She ended the game leading the team with three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored. Frey, Hopkins and Petito also crossed home twice.
Trailing 17-12 to start the bottom of the sixth, Hopkins put pressure on the defense with a walk and scored the 13th run of the game when McPhee singled to right. However, it was all the girls could muster up, as Midwest claimed a 17-13 victory with three quick outs following Hopkins’ run.
