The first win of the Little League all-star season for the Cape Region was secured by the Cape major softball all-stars in an 11-7 win over Laurel June 26.

Abby Frey started in the circle and faced some adversity in the first inning with the bases loaded and one out. However, she collected herself and the defense had her back, as they escaped with just two runs tagged against them.

Cali Smith picked up where she left off in the first game of the tournament, driving in Frey and lead-off batter Lexi Crossan with a single to tie the game. Advancing to third on the throws, Smith scored when Audreigh Kastor grounded out. Bailey Lubach’s single plated Lilyana Collins, giving Cape a 4-2 lead.

After Laurel scored in the third inning, Smith collected her third RBI when her single drove in Crossan. Kastor tallied her second RBI when she grounded out to score Smith, making it 6-3.

This time, Laurel responded a bit more forcefully, nearly tying the game, but settling for a 6-5 ledger after the defense clamped down. Arden MacPhee picked up one of her team-high three hits to start the bottom of the fourth, and then she around to score on Ta’Lynn Murray’s at-bat.

Up 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Crossan singled to start what would become a four-run finale for the Cape offense. Smith’s third hit of the game was a triple that scored Crossan and Frey. Smith crossed home when Collins bashed a double into right field. MacPhee’s single sent Collins to the dugout, with a pit stop at home for the final run Cape would put up.

Once again, Laurel threatened a comeback, but could only scrounge up two runs, resulting in an 11-7 win for Cape.

Cape continues in the District 3 tournament with a rematch against Midwest Friday, June 27. Cape fell to Midwest 17-13 in the opening round of the tournament.
