DelDOT needs to take immediate action to improve Route 1 safety

July 11, 2025

Earlier this week (once again), there were a few serious accidents on Route 1 south of the recently opened overpass at Route 16.

One at Hudson Road about 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, involved a friend of mine whose serious injuries required helicopter transport to Christiana.

What was DelDOT thinking allowing unimpeded drivers free rein on Route 1 without concern for the many drivers trying to cross?

In the past, motorists relied on the break in traffic that was created by the red light at Route 16. It no longer exists with the new overpass.

Vehicles traveling at highway speeds upwards of 90 mph are faced with drivers trying to cross Route 1 to reach their destination or cross into their communities.

It’s time the legislature recognized the insanity created here by an incompetent or careless administration and immediately remediated this issue. The Cape Gazette too, as well as the entire news media, need to pressure the powers that be to wake up and smell the coffee.

Recently, it was announced eight of these crossovers will be eliminated. A little too late, maybe?

Why wasn’t this remedy completed before they carelessly opened the Route 16 overpass knowing these incredibly dangerous crossovers have wreaked havoc for years?

We the people demand immediate action.
