Stanford University announced Dr. Sibyl Diver, a lecturer in the Earth Systems Program, has been named a 2025 recipient of the Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching, the university’s highest recognition for teaching achievement.

Originally from Lewes, Diver is celebrated for her transformational leadership in integrating the theory and practice of environmental justice into Stanford’s academic community. Through her visionary approach, she has inspired both students and colleagues to see the possibilities for pursuing rigorous scholarship while nurturing a deep care for people and community.

Among her many accomplishments, Diver has: developed innovative courses that empower students to pursue their own initiatives and goals for community-engaged scholarship; engaged community stakeholders in educational opportunities, equipping students with the skills to do the same; demonstrated limitless compassion and dedication to community, qualities that shine through her teaching, scholarship and leadership across campus; and brought together talented and driven individuals from across the university to unite in support of environmental justice.

Noting that her impact extends far beyond the classroom, President Jonathan Levin praised “[Diver’s] remarkable qualities and unwavering commitment to fostering both academic rigor and a culture of care.”

The award is presented annually at commencement to Stanford faculty who exemplify the highest standards of teaching, mentorship and educational innovation.
