Cannery Village reps present three-year lighting plan
Cannery Village in Milton is planning a complete overhaul of the development’s streetlights after presenting a three-year plan to town council.
Plans to replace all 58 streetlights and poles were presented and approved by a unanimous vote Aug. 4.
Tom York, representing Cannery Village, said the development’s grounds committee started work on the project as a way to refurbish and reinvigorate the streetlight poles.
“They’re deteriorating. They’re older poles; they're about 15 years old. They’re just not designed to last that long,” York said.
The committee reached out to Delmarva Power, which did an inventory of all the streetlights, he said. The plans were presented to town council because the electricity is paid for by the town.
The proposal is for Cannery Village to replace all the streetlights in the development with new, colonial-style streetlights, which rise straight up and have a light at the top spreading light multi-directionally. The plan calls for removing the existing high-pressure sodium lights and using new, energy-efficient LED-style lights.
York said the development spends $2,200 per month on streetlights. With the new poles and lights, he said the cost would go down to about $1,400 per month, saving about $16,000 per year on electricity. York said Delmarva Power will pay for the project, replacing 20 lights per year over the next three years.
Town council members were pleased with the proposal and gave their blessing to move forward.
Councilman Scotty Edler said, “It’s not often that someone comes before us that has an idea and not only does it not cost us anything, but it also saves us $16,000 a year.”
