Outraged at new fee for non-plug-in hybrid vehicle

September 9, 2025

I am outraged by the new $60 annual fee on non-plug-in hybrid vehicles under House Bill 164. I own a 2021 Toyota Camry, purchased largely to do my small part in reducing my impact on fossil fuel use. This fee punishes me for making responsible choices.

This is completely misguided policy. Delaware could modernize road funding with smarter solutions, such as mileage-based fees or proportional fuel-use taxes. Penalizing drivers for being responsible is lazy lawmaking and poor governance.

Frankly, you would expect this kind of policy in Texas, but not in Delaware. Charging a fee simply for choosing to drive efficiently is outrageous and highlights how lawmakers can ignore common sense, fairness and environmental responsibility.

I hope public awareness and constituent voices will encourage lawmakers to reconsider this fee and adopt policies that truly reward environmentally conscious driving.
