Royal Farms should pay for road improvements

September 26, 2025

I found it interesting that the top article on Page 1 of the Sept. 19 edition reported that a Sussex County councilwoman was pushing for a pause on development, while the next article reported that a state panel had recommended a $1.8 million grant to Royal Farms, a multi-billion-dollar corporation, to help them pay for infrastructure improvements so they can build a gas station/convenience store at Route 16 and Union Street Extended.

I did read the rest of the article where it was reported that this new complex would create 24 more jobs. This is presuming that a nearby local gas station is not adversely impacted.

My point is this: It looks like another development project is being given a free ride on the taxpayer’s dime. If infrastructure improvements are needed for this new business complex, the costs should be borne by the developer, Royal Farms, not the taxpayers.
