Cape football looked to bounce back from a heartbreaking 21-point loss to Lake Forest two weeks ago with a solid performance against Hodgson Vo-Tech on Homecoming night Sept. 19. The Vikings did just that, putting up 34 points while holding Hodgson to a single touchdown behind a dominant defensive effort.
Cape’s offense showed balance, scoring in every quarter. Junior quarterback Jameson Tingle went 12-for-18, passing for 145 yards, while also rushing 10 times for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Ty Handy added five carries for 55 yards and a score, along with two receptions for 47 yards.
“The O-line deserves a lot of the credit for my performance,” Handy said. “They really opened up some nice holes. I think we executed well. The white-out and Homecoming crowd made for an awesome atmosphere.”
Special teams provided a spark as well. Senior punter Navin Duffy successfully executed two fake punts, picking up 41 yards and two first downs. On offense, senior Quardell Richards hauled in three catches for 50 yards and added a highlight-reel 85-yard interception return for a touchdown. Senior Amari Jackson contributed four receptions for 29 yards.
Defensively, linebackers Javier Morales and Robbie Payton led the way with eight and seven tackles, respectively. Richards and Duffy each added five tackles, while Morales and Richards both recorded a sack.
“That loss to Lake really lit a fire under us,” Payton said. “Coach [Jason] Hunt put together a great game plan, and practice was intense. Everyone was locked in and gave 110%. It showed on the field. The defense dominated all night. We communicated, controlled the line and made a statement. We worked as a team, but there’s still work to do as we prepare for Smyrna.”
Hunt, the defensive coordinator, praised the unit’s preparation.
“We had a great week of practice and carried that into the game,” he said. “We were able to create big plays, force turnovers and get the ball back to our offense.”
Defensive backs coach Ben Ashby added, “The boys came out ready to compete and fly around. Jamar [Beasley] made an outstanding play, jumping in front of a receiver on a 10-yard out for a big interception.”
Now 3-1, the Vikings travel to Appoquinimink Friday, Oct. 3, to take on the Jaguars.
