Cape volleyball got back into the win column with a 25-17, 25-7, 25-17 home win over Polytech Sept. 30.
Senior setter Kaylee Sockriter led the Vikings with 20 assists and eight aces. She served the first 12 points for the Vikings. Amalia Fruchtman and Harper Mamele pounded nine and eight kills, respectively, with Mamele bumping six digs.
Sophomore Journey McDaniel had her best game with four kills, five aces, six digs and a block.
“I think it was a good game,” said McDaniel. “We all did our part successfully and did a really good job of staying focused. I think we applied great service pressure as well.”
“I’m happy to be walking out with a win,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “I don’t think we played our most engaged ball by any stretch. The energy throughout the gym felt flat, and rather than try and create energy with our style of play and communication, we kind of let that flatness infiltrate that.”
Despite that, he said his team executed core basics very well.
“ Kaylee, Journey and Harper each had significant runs throughout the match that forced Poly out of system,” he said. “Anejah [Johnson-Grace] was able to see the court from the middle and make some impact plays that added a small spark that I would like the team to keep feeding off of.”
The team was able to establish a steady rhythm with Fruchtman in the middle, which Coupe said continues to be a big piece of when the team is most successful.
He said the serve receive felt flat.
“A few more aces than I would have liked to have seen, so that’s going to be a priority headed into practice,” he said.
The Vikings (5-3) host Lake Forest (7-1) at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7.
