Love Creek Elementary Principal Equetta Jones and Kayla Hurst, a recent Cape Henlopen High School graduate, have built a relationship that demonstrates how schools not only shape students’ futures but how students, in turn, can inspire their educators.
While interning last year at Love Creek as an aspiring school counselor, Hurst quickly became more than just a helper in the building; she became a source of joy and encouragement for Jones. During her time at the school, Hurst made a lasting impression by bringing positivity and laughter into daily life. Even if she was having a rough day, she said Jones would make her laugh, and she promised she would return to visit Love Creek as she pursued her college studies.
Now a first-year college student, Hurst returned to Love Creek in late September to reconnect with staff and students who have supported her journey.
“Kayla came at a moment when I questioned my impact as a leader,” said Jones. “She reminded me that I do make a difference. I can’t wait to see who she becomes.”
Jones also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Garnet Rhue, Cape career counselor, for trusting Love Creek to play a role in Hurst’s path. Their shared story serves as a reminder that education extends beyond academics to help build relationships that empower both students and educators to grow.
The Cape Henlopen School District is proud to celebrate this story as an example of the strong bonds formed within its schools. Through these connections, students are supported in pursuing their goals, while educators are reminded of the importance of their work and the impact they have each day.
