November 26, 2025

The Cape Henlopen School District hosted the largest Special Olympics bocce ball tournament in the state of Delaware, bringing together more than 600 student athletes for a day of competition, inclusion and celebration Nov. 18 at Cape High’s Champions Field.

Students from schools across the district and participated in the event, which showcased the spirit of teamwork, sportsmanship and unity that defines Special Olympics. The tournament featured dozens of bocce courts spread across the field, allowing athletes of all abilities to compete in three rounds of tournament play.

“This event is a powerful reminder of what happens when a community comes together to support, uplift and champion every student,” said Dr. Eileen Baker, supervisor of inclusive learning. “The joy, determination and pride we saw today reflects the very best of our district and the mission of Special Olympics.”

Staff, families and student volunteers with the National Honor Society and Best Buddies Club helped make the large-scale event possible, assisting with everything from scorekeeping and equipment setup to cheering on athletes as they competed. For many students, the tournament served as both a highlight of their school year and an opportunity to build confidence, friendships and lasting memories.

“This is the fourth year we’ve hosted a large-scale bocce tournament, and our district is honored to hold this partnership with Special Olympics Delaware. It has offered a continuous opportunity to provide meaningful competitive experiences for so many young athletes,” Baker said. “Watching over 600 students come together on the field today was truly inspiring.”

In addition to competition, the event included opening ceremonies with the Cape Henlopen High School Unified Choir singing the national anthem, and athlete Luke Archer carrying the torch with Delaware State Police detective and School Resource Officer Chad Harmon, and Delaware State Police Sr. Cpl. Patrick Jackson. The Cape High drumline and the Mariner Middle School band provided entertainment throughout the tournament.
