Historic Lewes celebrated the incredible talents of its many supporters during an annual Volunteer Appreciation Event held Nov. 12 at the Lewes History Museum. More than 130 guests enjoyed music by The Jazzmen, hors d’oeuvres from J&B Grilling, and a preview of the museum’s new theater.
Director of Operations Patricia McCarthy thanked attendees for their service, calling volunteers “the heartbeat of Historic Lewes.” She also recognized the board of trustees for underwriting the event and expressed gratitude to the families and loved ones who support the many hours volunteers give.
Historic Lewes works with more than 250 volunteers each year whose contributions span gardening, boatbuilding, archival support, education, tour guiding and historical interpretation. Each year, a select group is honored for going above and beyond.
The 2025 volunteers of the year are Jim Bertholet, David Haines, Judy Hanson and Eileen Larkin.
Bertholet and Haines, longtime members of the volunteer Boat Build program, were celebrated for their expert craftsmanship in shipbuilding, with several of their vessels now on display in the boat exhibition on the historic campus.
“Their work captures the maritime spirit of Lewes and is admired daily by visitors,” McCarthy said.
Garden Gang volunteers Larkin and Hanson were recognized for their year-round efforts to maintain and beautify the Historic Lewes campus, as well as for their leadership of the annual Holiday Greens Sale. Their remarkable decorating talent, which transforms the campus into a Christmas wonderland each year, was likewise celebrated.
“The love they pour into our gardens makes an extraordinary difference,” McCarthy said, adding with a smile, “At this point, Williamsburg may need to step up its game.”
A highlight of the night was a beautifully crafted film montage of the year’s finest volunteer moments, created by trustee Paige Durivage and screened in the museum’s new theater. Raffle prizes wrapped up the festivities before guests enjoyed a final set from The Jazzmen.
Historic Lewes extended its thanks to all volunteers whose dedication supports its mission to preserve and share the history of Lewes.
