Jersey residents may cross bay for Atlantic Fields

December 19, 2025

A few casual observations/thoughts regarding the proposed Atlantic Fields development.

I have shopped at or driven past Costcos in the following states: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, Virginia, Florida and Hawaii. With one exception, none of the Costcos were in close proximity to schools or housing developments. The one exception is the Costco in Mount Laurel, N.J., which is directly across from a cluster of condos. The Costco predates the condo development by 20 years; the condos were built well after the Costco opened.

Will the Costco be selling gasoline and alcohol products? If so, I think those services will add to the number of vehicles visiting the area.

Finally, after a quick cost-benefit analysis, I would not be surprised to see cars from New Jersey visiting the Costco complex. With the nearest Costco being a 90-minute drive one way, with tolls, with wear and tear on the vehicle, the cost of gasoline, it might be more cost effective for residents of Cape May and southern Atlantic County to take the ferry over to Lewes and take advantage of the tax-free shopping Delaware offers.
