Motorist receives probation for summer crash in Rehoboth
A Lewes woman will serve three years probation, have to enter into a substance abuse program and lose her license as a result of a guilty plea to four charges related to a motor vehicle accident involving an international student worker.
Megan Smith pleaded guilty in Delaware Superior Court to charges of possession of a fictitious license, DUI, inattentive driving and second-degree vehicular assault for the accident that occurred in July on Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach. Smith’s sentence on three of the charges was suspended for probation instead of jail time. She also is to have no contact with the victim.
The international student, whose identity has not been made public, was in the country on a J-1 visa and had been bicycling home in the early morning hours from her job at Zelky’s on the Boardwalk.
Police said Smith was driving with a fake ID and found to be under the influence. She was arrested and later released on her own recognizance. The J-1 student spent a week in the hospital before being released. Zelky’s organized a GoFundMe for the student that raised $12,000 intended to go toward costs related to her recovery.
