Beacon Middle School cheerleaders took center stage on a national platform Jan. 9, when they were among several regional squads selected to perform during the Halftime Extravaganza during a Washington Wizards basketball game at the Capitol One Arena in Washington, D.C.
In preparation, the cheerleaders learned a complete halftime routine through an instructional video and then participated in an intensive three-hour, in-person practice alongside four other teams to perfect the choreography.
They were the only team representing Delaware. The opportunity came about when Beacon coach Courtney Brand was contacted by a former cheer colleague. This marks the fourth time Brand has collaborated with the organization over the years, continuing her long-standing connection within the cheerleading community.
The halftime performance lasted about three minutes and showcased the athletes’ energy, teamwork and dedication in front of a large professional sports audience. Adding to the excitement, two Beacon cheerleaders were selected during pregame practice to represent the school during the national anthem, an honor that also included the opportunity to meet several Washington Wizards players.
The experience provided Beacon cheerleaders with a memorable opportunity to perform at a professional sporting event, represent their school and state with pride, and gain valuable experience alongside teams from across the region.
