Delmarva Christian freshman guard Aarian Tucker scored 24 points, including 10 from the charity stripe, to lead the Royals to a 66-60 win over a formidable Red Lion Christian team Jan. 24, on the Royals’ Mohr Floor.
Both teams opened the game running the floor, and the first quarter ended with the Royals leading 18-14. They continued to build on their lead in the second, outscoring the Lions by three to go into the halftime break up 31-24. The Lions pulled to within five points in the third quarter, but Tucker scored nine points in the fourth quarter, including going 5-for-7 on foul shots, to close the cage door on the visiting Lions.
Royals sophomore Asher Woods added 15 points, including three three-pointers in the second half.
“I’m having the most fun I’ve ever had playing,” said Woods. “We all get along and trust one another. In the fourth, I knew we needed those threes, and my teammates trusted me, so I let it fly.”
Senior Seth Mifflin scored seven, while Noah Barbrow and Andrew Collins each scored six.
“I thought we played really well,” said Royals first-year coach Pat Woods. “We were all locked in and focused the entire time. We only had a few lapses in execution, but overall we were all together and able to get the shots we wanted and give up the shots we were willing to live with them shooting. We can still improve closing out games and improve our free-throw shooting. But today was a lot of fun. I’m grateful for the team, the environment and the support.”
