Walter Weldon Brittingham Jr., former city commissioner
Walter Weldon Brittingham Jr., 82, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Jan. 27, 2026, at AccentCare Hospice in Newark.
Walter was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Jan. 6, 1944, to Weldon and Betty Brittingham. His childhood started in Lewes, later moving to Rehoboth Beach. He graduated from Rehoboth High School in 1962, and attended college at Southern Technical Institute in Marietta, Ga. He later entered the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. Upon discharge, he returned to Delaware and worked in several family businesses, including Lewes Dairy Markets.
Walter was part of Mid-Atlantic Industrial and AVC Inc. with friends Joe Wastler and Leonard Tylecki. Walter served the City of Rehoboth Beach as a city commissioner and was a proud life member of Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company, holding many positions throughout the years.
Walter was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Brittingham; father, Walter Weldon Brittingham Sr.; brother, Henry “Hank” Brittingham; and spouse, Joan B. Walker-Brittingham.
He is survived by his son, Andrew Brittingham (Ryan) of Rehoboth Beach and Wilmington; sister, Suzanne Cowdery (John) of Iowa City, Iowa, and Rehoboth Beach; and close friend, Susan W. Smith of Rehoboth Beach.
Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life and final alarm at noon, Saturday, Feb. 21, at Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company Station 1, 219 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach.
Burial will be private.
