Lewes Art Gallery opens with ribbon cutting
Lewes Art Gallery hosted an opening reception and ribbon-cutting ceremony Feb. 6, at its new location on Market Street in Lewes. The gallery takes over the space previously occupied by Stepping Stone.
Formerly known as Cape Artists Gallery with a location on W. Third Street in Lewes, the new business showcases original artwork by more than 30 local artists and provides a welcoming space for creative collaboration. Mediums include fabric art/quilts, paintings, pottery and wood-cut prints.
“I wanted to create a warm and welcoming space that celebrates local artists by giving them a place to collaborate and display their work, while also offering the community access to art of all types and styles,” said George Farrah, one of the artists. “Art feeds the soul and enhances happiness.”
Cape Artists’ Gallery was forced to close in December when building owners Cindy and Tom DeEmedio decided to downsize, put their W. Third Street building on the market and move on. It was built in 1900. It has a two-bedroom apartment above the retail space.
In the weeks since, the artists renovated the Market Street space. The group was founded by Lewes residents who met for the first time in 1984, under the tutelage of renowned local painter Howard Schroeder.
