Rep. Claire Snyder-Hall offered commentary Feb. 5, on why we should not have term limits at various levels of our government. Her reasoning to not institute term limits is precisely the reason why there must be term limits.
The notion of term limits was discussed throughly and heatedly by our great forefathers before it was decided people would, on their own, enter government for short periods of time, then return to their jobs and farms. The idea of serving the public in government was never thought to be a full-time position until it became apparent to some it would be a way to achieve wealth and power.
In her commentary, Rep. Snyder-Hall so graciously offered nearly all the reasons term limits are absolutely required at all levels of our government. Senate Bill 222 may be considered a weak attempt at term limits in Delaware, but at least it is a step in the right direction. She does also note the need for campaign finance reform, and she is 100% correct. Campaign finance reform, along with term limits, can all but eliminate the desire for politicians to remain politicians, and send them back to their real jobs and homes.
Politics should not be a lifelong pursuit, nor should it be a career or business. It should remain as it was meant to be, serving the public.
