Members of local quilting group Piecemakers awarded two Quilts of Valor to recipient veterans Feb. 21, at Open Arms Seventh-day Adventist Church in Milton.
A Quilt of Valor is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a service member or veteran who has been touched by war.
Quilts of Valor is a grassroots group of volunteer quilters. Their three-part message is honor, freedom and comfort. The top of the quilt represents the many individuals making up the community, the batting or filler represents warmth, and the backing is the strength that supports the recipients. Each stitch represents love, gratitude and tears of the maker.
The awarded quilt says, unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.”
Kenneth Paul served in the U.S. Navy for seven years, beginning in 2007. Roger Maurice Cain served in the U.S. Army for nine years, beginning in 1983, and served in the Army Reserve for six years in Seaford.
The Piecemakers invite those interested in Quilts of Valor to attend their circle the first Tuesday of each month from 11 a.m to 3 p.m. at Open Arms Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 116 Federal St., Milton.
