Sussex Technical High School graduate Hannah Murphy is earning valuable clinical hours toward her postgraduate degree while working with the school’s athletic trainer Heather Heidel.
Murphy graduated from the Physical Therapy and Athletic Healthcare Technologies program in 2021 and is currently completing her master’s degree in athletic training at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Her work at Sussex Tech counts toward the clinical hours requirement as part of her full-immersion experience.
During her time at Sussex Tech, Murphy has been fully integrated into the daily operations of a high school athletic trainer. She is working with various winter sports teams including wrestling, swim, indoor track, and boys’ and girls’ basketball as they wrap up their seasons, and she will experience the first week of spring sports.
Murphy said she felt properly prepared entering the college athletic training program after graduating from Sussex Tech. “The content I was taught by Miss Maull in the Physical Therapy and Athletic Healthcare Technologies introduced me to information which most others in my class had never seen before. The study habits and material I learned allowed me to succeed in my courses, serving as an invaluable part of my education,” said Murphy.
Following her graduation this May, Murphy hopes to pass her board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer. “I came into this high school setting rotation of my clinical experience excited to absorb any knowledge Heidel could share with me. Over the past few years, I was so sure I wanted to work in the collegiate setting. However, after spending time with Heidel, her amazing student-athletes, and the wonderful staff members who support her, I have grown to love the community they have. My hope is to find an athletic trainer position at either the collegiate or high school setting,” said Murphy.
Sussex Technical High School is a public school that prepares Sussex County students for their future success in workforce environments, higher education and the military.
