Sussex Academy volleyball shows up ready to work

Seahawks seeking to build off last season, ruffle some feathers
March 19, 2026

A couple seasons of taking their lumps might have other programs down, but the Sussex Academy boys’ volleyball team has taken it all in stride, and players are focused for the 2026 season.

“We're starting at a much better place than we started last year,” said coach Dreonna Phillips. “We are already where we finished last year. They all have better skill level. Last year, we were so green [and] I had so many brand-new players. I'm really happy with how eager they were to get back into the gym and keep going. I have high hopes for this season.”

A noticeable difference is the height, and air time, of the hitters.

“It's always good to have taller guys, especially when they know what they're doing a little more,” senior Owen Schrader said. “We're learning how to use the length that we've got.”

The guy tasked with unlocking the potential of the team is senior Vito Barone.

“I've been the setter for twoish years now, and there’s always been pressure, but this year, I'm a senior,” Barone said. “I want to make the best impression I can, especially with all the new guys coming in.”

A positive mood helps when diving on that hardwood.

“Our coaches preach to have fun,” said senior Jerry Green. “And the only thing they're making us do differently this year is to be a little scrappier.”

Phillips is joined by Alex Castro on the coaching staff. Both coaches appear to tailor their lessons for the various skill levels on the small-school team, and know how to keep the boys interested in the growing sport. The coaches are hoping enthusiasm for the sport expands beyond the Sussex Academy gym walls.

“I want more boys to play volleyball,” Phillips said. “Hopefully more schools will make teams so we can have more competition down here.”

Sussex Academy will open its season at 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, at A.I. du Pont.

Aaron Mushrush joined the sports team in Summer 2023 to help cover the emerging youth athletics scene in the Cape Region. After lettering in soccer and lacrosse at Sussex Tech, he played lacrosse at Division III Eastern University in St. David's, PA. Aaron coached lacrosse at Sussex Tech in 2009 and 2011. Post-collegiately, Mush played in the Eastern Shore Summer Lacrosse League for Blue Bird Tavern and Saltwater Lacrosse. He competed in several tournaments for the Shamrocks Lacrosse Club, which blossomed into the Maryland Lacrosse League (MDLL). Aaron interned at the Coastal Point before becoming assistant director at WMDT-TV 47 ABC in 2017 and eventually assignment editor in 2018.
