The Cape girls’ lacrosse team was at Caesar Rodney to open the season March 25. The Riders are resurgent under head coach Gina Voss, as they were a final four team in 2025.
It was an inauspicious beginning for Cape. The Vikings’ Haley Gamuciello was stoned on the doorstep by goalie Mei-Li Fite. The Riders cleared the ball, then Madison Mark went down with a non-contact knee injury while chasing a ground ball.
After a delay, play resumed and Caesay Rodney scored twice on goals by Ella Brown and Logan Fuchs.
And then it was “Draw Control to Major Diehl.”
Ally Diehl, last season’s Player of the Year, led a surge of 15 unanswered goals for the final score of 15-2.
“I was really happy with the team and how they played,” said Cape coach Lindsey Underwood. “Many of the things that we’ve been working on at practice they were able to come out and execute, which was really great to see. We started to have some more offensive flow that we had at our scrimmages. Defensively, we looked pretty solid. Emily [Wells] stepped up great for us in the cage after a year off. She has been working hard and has had consistent play during practice.”
Diehl controlled the draw and scored six goals in the game. Gamuciello, using her flash and slash speed game, netted three goals. Claire Lopez contributed two goals and an assist.
The Vikings led 9-2 at the half and 10-2 after three periods.
Single goals were scored by Regan Best, Makenzie Todd, Mikaela Gordon and Kemper Cox, her first as a varsity player.
Regarding Mark’s injury early in the game, Underwood said, “Hoping Madi’s injury isn’t as severe as it looked. She came into the season in the best shape I have ever seen her. Extremely fast and strong, so hoping she is OK.”
Cape will host Broadneck High school at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 28. The Bruins are the four-time Maryland 4A state champion.
Cape beat Broadneck last season 17-11. Cape has beaten them three straight times, but lost at home in 2022 by a score of 16-13.
