Seahawks claim 5-0 victory over Golden Knights
A friendly neighborhood tennis match broke out on the Sussex Academy courts March 31, resulting in a 5-0 win for the Seahawks over rival Sussex Central.
Karina Lopez wrapped up the first-singles match with a pair of 6-0 set victories to earn Sussex Academy’s first team point. The senior captain was serving and receiving with confidence despite the windy conditions.
The second-singles match took a bit longer, as freshman Macy Wheatley played her usual game of patience mixed in with endurance to come away with a point. She won the first set 7-6 following a 7-3 tiebreaker. Her opponent, Kelaiah Nock, flipped the score in the second set to set up the deciding third set. Wheatley won 11-9 to take the match 2-1.
Sophomore Natalia Gatti secured the third-singles match with a 7-5 first set and a commanding 6-1 second set. Her former doubles partner, Gia Berberian, linked up with Audrey Gulab to take on Talia and Sonja Winger in first doubles. Berberian and Gulab came away with a 7-5 tiebreaker win for a 7-6 first-set victory and grabbed the point with a 7-5 second set.
In second doubles, Ryan Shipp and Minahil Kayani took the first set 6-4, but dropped the second set 6-3 to Kenley Rogers and Estefania Yanez-Yanez to force a third-set tiebreaker. Shipp and Kayani’s 10-5 triumph put a ribbon on the 5-0 shutout and moved Sussex Academy up to 2-0 in the young season.
The Seahawks faced Dover Thursday, April 2, before taking some time off for spring break. Sussex Academy will return to action Tuesday, April 14, when the girls host Cape Henlopen, while the boys travel to Lewes to take on the Vikings.
