Although they were kept at bay in the first half, the girls of the Sussex Academy soccer team burst through the Laurel barricade in the second half, scoring seven in an 8-0 win.
Eighth-grader Garrity Cox opened the scoring for the Seahawks, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead about 10 minutes into the contest. Laurel packed it in after that score and managed to sniff out a few scoring chances.
Things were much different in the final 40 minutes. Cox completed a hat trick and added an assist to her stat line. Her classmate Lyla Fox netted a brace and also had a helper. Maggie Roblero-Chavez joined her middle school classmates with a goal of her own. Senior Debora Williams dominated the back line, but also put one in as part of the scoring effort. Sophomore Addyson Bleile put herself in the stat book, giving the Seahawks five different scorers. Junior Maya Hastings and sophomore Eva Taylor each had an assist, meaning Sussex Academy assisted on half of its eight goals.
With the win, the Seahawks move to 5-2-1 and will take on Delmar Thursday, April 23.
