Before moving to Lewes we lived in Frederick, Md. When we moved there in the mid-1990s, Frederick was trying to solve its parking problem. The downtown area was being stifled by a lack of parking. They too tried many of the solutions that have been attempted in Lewes. The idea of a parking garage was met with a lot of resistance. Many believed they were ugly structures that would ruin the look of a historic cityscape. Finally one was approved. Once complete, it was almost invisible. Architects did an amazing job to make sure it blended nicely with adjacent buildings. Today, there are four parking garages in the downtown area, and businesses are thriving. I would suggest the City of Lewes reach out to Frederick to gain more insight. I believe a parking garage is a very viable solution.
