Gallery One artists will present works in keeping with the theme Becoming for its newest show, which opened to the public April 29 and runs through Tuesday, June 2.
Becoming explores the evolving nature of identity, change and self-discovery. It may follow the journey from seed to bloom, or from ideas to expressions. Several of the artists have chosen to explore the process of growing up, becoming an older version of oneself.
Dale Sheldon's acrylic painting, "Becoming a Beach Dude,” depicts a boy joyfully playing at the beach who might become a beach dude someday. In her piece, "When I Grow Up,” Joyce Condry paints a young mallard duck and its mother. Cheryl Wisbrock's painting, "Osprey Nest" depicts two adult birds enjoying their perch that will welcome a family in the near future.
Other artists explored the concept of Becoming in a more technical sense. Cindy Beyer, in her watercolor, "Spontaneous Ideation,” started with a few primary-colored flowers and doodled in the remaining lines and forms, letting them become whatever she wanted. In Laurie Fields' piece, "Sand Storm,” the heavy texture came first, dictating what the piece was going to become. Laura Hickman, in her pastel, "Surf's Up,” imagined the excitement of an early morning surfer as he rushed to the sea to become one with its beautiful waves.
The gallery has recently welcomed two new artisans – Tina Edgar offering colorful multimedia fish, and Mitzi Ash showing beautiful hand-painted silk scarves. Their work is on display in addition to the current collection of jewelry, glass, ceramics, purses, wood and mosaics. Gallery One is at 32 Atlantic Ave. in Ocean View.
