Seahawks celebrate seniors with 7-5 softball win over Laurel
A 7-5 win over Laurel on Senior Night April 28 could be the boost the Sussex Academy softball team needs to close out the season on a hot streak.
Before the first pitch, the Seahawks honored seniors Ryan Lowe, Eva Boos and Delainie Monitzer for the years of successful service to the emerging program.
Sussex Academy plated three runs in the first inning to take a 3-1 lead. Freshman Danica Bergh beat out a throw for an infield single to open the game. Senior Delainie Monitzer laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Bergh over to second, and then Grayce Glover drove in the freshman with a double over the center fielder’s head. Audrey Snyder drove in Glover before a series of walks ended with an RBI free pass for Lowe.
Both defenses settled down after the first inning to keep the score in single digits. The Seahawks remained patient at the plate and seemed to pick the right pitches to make contact. Glover picked up another RBI and a triple to lead the way offensively. Caroline White started in the circle and helped her cause with an RBI single. The junior also made a double play in the seventh inning, by herself, to stomp out a Bulldogs threat.
Rilynn LeCates ended the game in the circle and, along with her pitch velocity, flashed some rather quick reflexes.
Sussex Academy moves to 6-5 with the win and took on Milford after the Cape Gazette deadline April 30.
